Visiting Harlow Carr

You no longer have to book tickets in advance to visit the garden. Pre-booking is still available for both members and non-members, if you would prefer to book in advance. Book your garden visit >

Staying safe

Our foremost priority is always the health and safety of our members, visitors, staff and volunteers, and we ask that everyone continues to support efforts to reduce the spread of the virus. Additional safety and hygiene measures remain in place, including availability of hand sanitiser for visitors and staff, and enhanced cleaning.

We ask that everyone visiting Harlow Carr please familiarise themselves with the latest Government advice and follow these measures:

• At busy times and in crowded areas, be mindful of the needs of others by making space and considering wearing a face covering if you are able
• Please read the public health messaging displayed around Harlow Carr
• Wash hands more frequently for at least 20 seconds

Facilities

• Toilets available at the garden entrance and near the Old Bath House
• Play areas are open

To maintain accessibility for all our visitors we have:

• Maintained full accessibility across the garden, Welcome building and Garden Centre
• A limited number of mobility vehicles and manual push wheelchairs are available. To book, please call 01423 724681, preferably with at least 24 hours’ notice. For safety, our scooters have a max weight limit of 20 st. To provide maximum availability to our visitors, they are available to book from 9.30am–1.30pm or 1.30pm–5pm (Mar–Oct) and 9.30am–3pm (Nov–Feb)
• Members of staff on hand to bring you a wheelchair to use while you wait
• Ample accessible parking
• Accessible toilet facilities available at the garden entrance and in the garden

Please note: If you are feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms associated with Coronavirus (Covid-19) you will not be permitted entry to Harlow Carr.

How to cancel your booking
If you can't make your pre-booked time slot, please try to cancel it so that someone else can enjoy a visit. To cancel your booking, please email [email protected]​ at least 24 hours in advance and include your booking reference.

**Proof of car-free travel will need to be provided before entering the garden.

One carer or companion is admitted free of charge per wheelchair user, visually impaired visitor or another person whose disability necessitates a carer.
 

Dogs not allowed in garden

For the safety of all our visitors, dogs are not allowed in the garden, with the exception of registered support dogs.

Food & drink

Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms: Open daily for indoor dining 9am–5pm.

Bettys Shop: Open daily for takeaway 9am–5pm.

Bettys Tea House: Open daily for takeaway 9.30am–5pm.

The Shop and Tea Rooms are located next to the garden entrance and the Tea House is located inside the garden.

Garden Centre

Harlow Carr Garden Centre is open with additional safety measures in place.

Car-free

We welcome car-free visitors to RHS Garden Harlow Carr. When you travel to the garden by bus, cycle or on foot, we offer a car-free travel discount (see admission prices), when you provide proof of visiting car-free. Plan your car-free journey at Good Journey.

By car

RHS Garden Harlow Carr is situated on Crag Lane, off Otley Road (B6162) about a mile and a half from the centre of Harrogate. Car parking is free.

If you have a large vehicle or a vehicle with a tow bar, we kindly ask that you park in car park two or three.
 

By bike

Thirty cycle racks are available at the gardens.

On foot

A lovely walk runs from Valley Gardens in Harrogate, up through the Pine Woods to RHS Garden Harlow Carr, taking approximately an hour at a leisurely pace. You can download a detailed map (759kB pdf) or ask for a printed copy from the Harrogate Tourist Information Centre or RHS Garden Harlow Carr.

By train

The closest station is Harrogate (1½ miles). For times and tickets see the National Rail Enquiries website.

By bus

Take the X6a service running from Harrogate Bus Station to a bus stop close to RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Services vary, please check the Transdev Buses website or telephone 01423 566 061.

• Sometimes the tracks and paths can be muddy, steep and uneven – please wear suitable footwear and take care

Drone usage

We are concerned that the use of drones may introduce risks of injury to our staff or visitors, damage to our property, plants or local wildlife, or breaches of data protection laws. Personal drone usage is therefore prohibited at RHS Gardens. Commercial drone usage is also prohibited, save where occasionally commercial drone operators with suitable training and licences from the Civil Aviation Authority are allowed by the RHS to operate drones in an RHS Garden only where express permission has been provided to the drone operator in writing by the Head of RHS Garden Harlow Carr.

Dogs in the garden

For the safety of all our visitors only assisting dogs are allowed in the garden. We also strongly advise that you do not bring your pet on hot days as there is little to no shade in our car parks.

Garden seating

There are approximately 200 benches sited around the garden at regular intervals. These are of varying height with most offering arm rests.

Garden toys

We are sorry but garden toys, such as scooters and balls, are not permitted in the garden.

Smoking policy

For the health & welfare of our visitors we operate a no-smoking policy, inclusive of e-cigarettes, in or near certain areas of the garden, including: dining or food outlets, eating areas or terraces, picnic areas, covered spaces or buildings and the children’s play area. This may extend to other areas of the garden in periods of very dry weather.
